The design for the inner courtyard began with the intention to make a place within the new Balsillie School at The Center For International Governance Innovation in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, designed by KPMB Architects.  A series of elements overlaid each other, giving building materials a formal quality and strong voice. Highlighting significant moments of progress in international governance, copper markers are located on an unseen world map as one moves through the courtyard.

This courtyard design includes a circular Terrazzo bench surrounded by Mara and Hope Bay stone inlays, a galvanized steel column, a copper electroplated aluminum knee wall with a single Terrazzo seating element, and all landscape elements. This projects included all aspects of the 118' x 145' area.

Intended for the students to have a place to be within the school while on the outside, the relationship of the courtyard and surrounding buildings create the duality of inside/outside.
