WARD HOUSE

The Fifth Ward Wardroom, a historic meeting hall built in 1886, was used as a polling place, school and American Legion Hall. It was named after Henrietta Drummond, a Rhode Islander who served and died a nurse in World War I. Designed by William R. Walker & Son, it is on the National Register of Historic Places before being converted into a single family residence in the early 1980’s. Most recently an artist’s studio, the new intervention is a consideration of rooms nested within each other, on their own, leaving the existing structure to be from its own time.

The design responds to the new clients’ love to entertain and cook for guests and family. The vision for the living and dining area was to be a flexible space with a timber-frame, lofted guest bedroom placed above the kitchen, laundry room and half bath. A master suite sits back in the more private area behind the curved door.
